Definition

The combination resume is one of the three mainstream types of resume formats used today; the other formats being chronological and functional resumes. A combination resume is organized into two parts or pages. The first part of a combination resume is a functional format, which highlights skills and accomplishments. The second part of the combination resume is a reverse chronological work history.

Explanation

The combination resume format is considered an ideal marketing layout because it first highlights skills and accomplishments, then gives the hiring company, or recruiter, a sense of security by providing an account of work history.

The advantage of combination resumes is that they highlight recent job experiences, which might be applicable to the position being pursued. They also allow the potential employer to easily follow the job applicant's career progression.

The disadvantage of combination resumes is that if the writer has a gap in their career history, or a seemingly illogical career progression, then this is highlighted in the second section of this format.

Example

The sections appearing in a combination resume are as outlined below, and in the following order:

  1. Name / Contact Information

  2. Education

  3. Honors / Certificates

  4. Career Skills / Knowledge

  5. Career Achievements

  6. Work Experience (In reverse chronological order)
