Free Application for Federal Student Aid

To apply for federal aid and to apply for many state student aid programs, students must first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA.  The FAFSA is used to apply for federal student financial aid, such as grants, loans, and work-study. In addition, most states and schools use information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to award non-federal aid.

The student will also receive a Student Aid Report, or SAR, through the mail or the Internet. The SAR lists the information you reported on your FAFSA, and will tell you your Expected Family Contribution or EFC.  Households are expected to supply financial information about the household so the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) can be calculated.

Other forms of this term include -FAFSA
