A Heading on a resume or cover letter is used to grab the attention of the recruiter or potential employer. The heading should provide the reader with a two to five word description of your background or area of expertise. The heading you choose can be used optionally on either the cover letter and / or the resume itself.
The heading should appear on the same line as your name, and attempt to define who you are from a career perspective. For example, if you have worked in the area of budgeting or finance, your heading might be something like:
- Financial / Business Analyst, or
- Financial Planning Manager / Finance Executive
Below is an example of a format that can be used for a heading statement appearing at the top of a cover letter or the resume itself:
JOHN SMITH Financial Planning Manager / Finance Executive
