Combination Resumes

Combination Resumes are one of the three mainstream types of resume formats used today, the other formats being chronological resumes and functional resumes.  A combination resume is organized into two parts or pages.  The first part of a combination resume is a functional format that highlights skills and accomplishments.

The second part of the combination resume is a reverse chronological work history.  The combination resume format is considered an ideal marketing format because it first highlights skills and accomplishments, then give the hiring company or recruiter a sense of security by displaying work history.

  • The advantage of combination resumes is that they highlight more recent job experiences that might be applicable to the position being pursued and allow the potential employer to easily follow career progression.
  • The primary disadvantage of combination resumes is that if you've had a gap in your career history or a seemingly illogical career progression, this is highlighted in the second part of this format.

More detail on this resume format can be found in our publication - Combination Resume.
