 If you've ever managed a project, then you know how important it is to stay organized. Well, the same can be said about putting together a resume. A properly constructed resume for a project manager needs just as much organization and thought as your last project's Gantt Chart.
In this publication, we're going to talk about resumes for project managers. The first part of that discussion will include a brief summary of the various resume styles in use today as well as how to go about choosing the best style. Resume Styles for Project Managers
As is the case with all resume formats, there are pros and cons to the use of each of the three types utilized today. Our assumption is that a project manager has gained enough work experience to select a resume format that will highlight those on-the-job experiences they want to emphasize. As a reminder, the three resume formats include:
- Functional Resume - a functional resume is a good choice for a project manager that is just starting out, or someone that is trying to move up to a project manager's role from a junior position.
- Chronological Resume - a chronological resume is a good choice if you've been working as a project manager for several years and believe your work experience is more important than the skills you've acquired over time.
- Combination Resume - the combination resume is the most marketable of the three resume styles in use today. If you have a lot of project-related experience and you possess strong stills, then this is probably the best format to use.
Project Management Certifications
With most projects, a manager has three concerns - budget, quality, and schedule. A project manager's challenge is to balance all three of these areas effectively. Because of the complexities associated with managing these objectives within a large project, special areas of study are undertaken, and professional certifications are typically held by workers in this position such as:
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
- Master Project Manager (MPM)
- Advanced Project Management Certification (APMC)
- Certified Project Manager (CPM)
We mention this because companies looking for a product manager will frequently seek a candidate with these types of credentials. And as you'll see in our example later on, a combination style resume highlights these certifications by presenting them to the reader near the beginning of the resume.
Sample Resume for Project Managers
The sample resume we have for product managers is in the combination resume style that's been modified slightly to accommodate the certifications section mentioned earlier. If you don't have a lot of on-the-job experience as a project manager, then you might want to consider using the functional resume style - this way you're able to highlight the knowledge and skills you've acquired.
