In this article on resume writing, we are going to help explain how to put together resumes for police officers. The explanation we'll provide below, and the sample resume, will apply to many different law enforcement positions, whether you're looking for a job as a detective, sergeant or chief of police.
Resume Styles for Police Officers
The resume styles used in the law enforcement will follow the same rules as other professions. That means the information contained on the resume itself is pretty much aligned with that you'd find elsewhere - and so is how it's organized on the resume itself.
There are three resume formats from which you can choose to build your resume. Each resume format has its own strengths and weaknesses. Picking the format that best markets your resume is a choice you need to make before you start writing. You should choose carefully because picking the wrong format means you might have to re-type the entire document.
To help you choose between the three formats, we've included a brief explanation of their strengths and weaknesses below:
Chronological Resume
The chronological resume is the most popular of all the resume formats you will encounter. That doesn't mean it's the best format - it's just a popular one. The focus of this resume is where you've worked in the past and with secondary consideration for what you know. This resume format leads off with a reverse chronological account of your work history.
Functional Resume
The functional resume is a good choice for police cadets that are right out of school or for those officers without a lot of practical experience. That's because the functional format highlights what you learned - your knowledge and skills - not where you've worked.
Combination Resume
The combination resume is arguably the best resume format you can use when trying to find a job. That's because it provides the recruiter or hiring officer with your qualifications right up front. The skills section is then followed by a reverse chronological account of you work history - so that the hiring department can feel more comfortable about where you've worked.
We've got samples of each of these resume styles that you can download for free. We've even got resume templates that you can use to help get started writing your own resume.
Sample Resumes for Police Officers
As we've already mentioned, the resume for a police office is very much like those of other professions. Normally, the brotherhood and / or sisterhood of officers do a lot of charitable work outside of their day jobs - so you want to be sure to mention that on your resume.
You can download the sample resume here - Police Officer Resume. Keep in mind that the sample we're providing is just that - an example that you can use to stimulate your own ideas. That being said, the example we've provided has plenty of statements that are good examples that you can borrow from.
