This article is going to discuss how to go about putting together resumes for college internships. But first we'd like to mention that working with a college intern is an absolutely wonderful experience. We've had several interns work for us directly over the years and interacted with many more.
It's a positively win-win situation because the intern gets some very valuable work experience and the hiring company gets a college educated individual at bargain prices. A second benefit of internships is that they allow companies and college students to evaluate each other. The company gets to figure out if they might want to hire the intern after graduation and the intern gets to figure out their likes and dislikes about the work environment.
Resume Formats for Internships
Enough about the benefits of internships themselves, we're supposed to be talking about how to go about writing a resume for an internship. Well, resumes for an intern are very much like resumes for college students. In fact, it's a natural to use that particular article as the basis for this one.
It would be unusual for someone looking for a job as an intern to have a lot of work experience. The lack of work experience really places a limit on the type of resume an intern might use. If you're interested in learning about the various resume formats in use today, then take a look at our articles on combination resumes and chronological resumes. In most situations, those two resume formats will not be effective for an intern.
Functional Resumes for Interns
We're going to assume that an intern doesn't have a lot of significant work experience and therefore recommend that they use the functional resume format. If, for whatever reason, you're an intern that has a lot of prior work experience, then take a look at the alternative resume formats mentioned above. If you're like the vast majority of interns, then just keep reading.
The reason that a functional resume is the best format for an intern is because it emphasizes their skills and achievements - including college coursework - and de-emphasizes where they've worked in the past. Generally, that's the exact combination that an intern or a college student is looking for when writing a resume.
Example Resume for Interns
We're definitely in-tune with your needs and we do realize that you're looking for that example resume that you can download. But we've also worked with interns in the past, so we're going to briefly explain what we've looked for in an intern's resume before providing you with an example.
First off, everyone starts in the same place. That is to say, everyone's had a first job or very little experience to write about. Nearly every hiring manger has been through exactly what an intern is going through - so we can empathize. You should use that fact to your advantage if you can by letting your written resume emphasize what you've learned along the way.
You also need to stay connected to your school's career center. Think of it this way, you go to college to try to get a better job when you graduate. That's the primary benefit of attending school. So it only makes sense that colleges are very interested in placing their students in permanent jobs and internships.
You also need to stay tapped into friends and family - use your networking skills. Whenever we've hired an intern it was either through someone we knew or by working with a local college's career center. I suspect that we're not alone with this approach.
