Taking a close look at resume writing samples is an important part of the learning process. No matter how much information you read on resume formats and how much time you spend finding the one that is best suited to marketing your talents, until you see some samples it is hard to apply the concept.
We recognize this problem and have put together several free resume writing samples for you to take a look at and even download for free. Before we get to those resume samples we want to take the time to talk about the importance of each resume style and the challenges you're going to face when putting a resume together.
Resume Writing Challenges
We have no intention of putting together a comprehensive list of resume writing samples for every imaginable job in the American workplace. If you are looking for a resume sample for a particular position, then you are really looking for a shortcut that we cannot defend or support.
That's because no one else has learned the things you have at work or had the same experiences. You should be proud that you are a unique human being with a unique background - and your resume needs to reflect that fact. Besides, you are going to face many challenges if you attempt to take a resume sample for a similar position and modify it to your situation.
That's because you first need to recognize the strengths of your work history and then determine the correct resume format to highlight your strengths. That's where the knowledge of the different types of resume formats to use comes into play. A much better starting point for a resume sample is choosing the correct format. Once you've seen how this format can highlight your strengths, then you can substitute your experiences.
Combination Resume Sample
The combination resume format is the first of the resume writing samples we will discuss. This resume format is sometimes referred to as a two page format because it starts out like a functional resume and finishes up like a chronological resume. We've discussed type of resume this in more detail in our full article on Combination Resume. There we talk about the pros and cons of this format, but generally this is the ideal resume design to use.
The combination resume highlights the skills you have right up front, then gives the hiring manager or recruiter your chronological work history so they are more comfortable in understanding where you have worked in the past. Here is where you can download your free combination resume writing sample.
Functional Resume Sample
The second resume writing sample we will discuss is the functional resume format. Generally, this format does not draw attention to gaps in employment history and highlights the skills you've acquired over time. This is discussed in more detail in our article on Functional Resume.
Here is where you can download a free functional resume writing sample.
Chronological Resume Sample
The last of our resume writing samples is the chronological resume format. This is probably the layout you are used to seeing in the past. The pros and cons of this type of resume are discussed in more detail in our article on Chronological Resume.
The chronological resume format presents your work history in reverse chronological order right up front and gives the reader a sense of security that you have not had any large gaps in your employment history. If that is not the case, then you should give serious consideration to using an alternate resume format. Here is where you can download a free chronological resume writing sample.
More Resume Writing Examples
If you're looking or more resume writing examples or ones that are targeted to specific jobs (despite our warnings) we can help there too. The follow articles explain some of the nuances of a particular type of job and each article provides an example resume too.
Up to this point we've provided you with links to over twelve resume writing samples in total - which should be more than enough for anyone looking to create a good looking resume.
Final Words on Resume Writing Samples
In nearly every one of our resume writing articles, we have mentioned that the primary purpose of a resume is to market your talents. Resume writing samples can be helpful in getting you started if they are used the right way.
Don't make the mistake of looking for resume samples that are specific to your job function. If you do, then you might use the wrong format and this defeats the purpose of the resume itself. Rather take our suggested approach to resume writing and use our free samples that start with the format that best markets your experiences.
If you don't understand which resume format is best for your situation, we have plenty of resume writing resources to help you make that decision. You are better served by taking the time to educate yourself first. This may save you time later on if you realize that your resume tells a less than optimal story because you've chosen the wrong resume format.
