Resume Objective Statement Examples

Resume WritingIt seems like everyone is always looking for examples, statements they can copy or learn from, and use in their resume or cover letter.  If you've been looking for examples, then we have several resume objective statement examples that will help give you some ideas.  But before we get to the examples, let's talk briefly about how these resume objective statements can be used.

While some experts will suggest that resume objectives or statements belong in the document itself, none of the resume formats we recommend include an objective statement.  To understand why we choose not to include one in the resume, you need to understand the purpose of an objective statement.

Purpose of an Objective Statement

  Additional Resources

The purpose of an objective statement is to tell the reader what you are trying to achieve:  your personal or professional objectives.  The statement is a concisely written declaration that answers the question - Why are you sending me a resume?

If we agree that the objective statement's purpose is to explain to the reader the reason for sending them a resume in the first place, then clearly this explanation belongs in the resume cover letter.  There is really no good reason for wasting space on the resume itself by including this statement.

Resume Objectives

That being said, some of you may still want to use a resume objective statement in the resume you're writing.  We'll leave the choice of how you want to use an objective statement up to you, and your own creative instincts.

Whether the statement appears in a cover letter or in a resume, the format for creating a good objective statement is the same.  The approach we're going to discuss in this article provides a good foundation for writing a resume objective, and that holds true for the examples appearing below too.

Objective Statement Format

The objective statement is typically included as the second paragraph of a resume cover letter.  The first paragraph should give the reader a good reason to continue reading through the cover letter, and then on to the resume itself.  It should present your career highlights and achievements, and get the reader excited about your prospects of working at their company.

Once you've convinced the reader that you have the right skills and experience, the next step is to tell them why you are sending them a resume.  For example, you might be responding to an advertisement found on a website or in a newspaper.  In that situation, you may want to identify the exact position you are seeking at the company.

If you are looking for a job within an organization, but you don't know the exact job title, then the format you would use is more of an organizational objective statement.  This type of objective statement would be more "vague" than one that is targeting a specific position in an organization.

What you want to avoid is using a resume objective statement that is so restrictive that the reader does not see a good fit in their organization or, even worse, that you are not considered for another job opening in the company.  This is another good reason for putting the objective statement in the cover letter and not on the resume itself:  It is much easier to modify the objective statement on a cover letter to fit an organization, than it is to rewrite your resume for every single job prospect.

Components of a Cover Letter or Resume Objective Statement

As far as the statement itself goes, when you break it down, the format is composed of three parts or components:

  • What you're doing: I am bringing or presenting to you my objectives for your review.
  • What you're presenting them with: my achievements, skills, knowledge - which also appears on the resume itself.
  • Why you're sending them a resume: to discuss joining their company as a member of a group, team or department.

Objective Statement Examples / Samples

Now that we have a better understanding of the purpose, and format, of the objective statement, let's get to the information you've been looking for - examples / samples.  As previously mentioned, if you have multiple resume objectives, then you're going to need to come up with multiple versions of an objective statement.

For example, you may be interested in both a general management team position, as well as a marketing job.  Achieving that goal requires developing multiple objective statements.  That being said, here are some objective examples that would appear in the second paragraph of your cover letter:

Example 1 - Financial Executive Objective Statement

I want to bring to your attention the achievements, skills, strategic thinking and leadership abilities enabling me to exceed earnings goals under less than ideal economic conditions so that we can discuss my joining XYZ Company as a member of your Financial Planning group.

Example 2 - Spend Management Executive Objective Statement

I am presenting to you my skills, work ethic, achievements and no-nonsense negotiating abilities so that we can discuss my joining ABC Company as a member of your Spend Management team.

Example 3 - Real Estate Executive Objective Statement

I am bringing to your attention my skills, achievements and ability to lead personnel in a direction that provides superior earnings so that we can discuss my joining Company ABC s a member of your Real Estate team.

Example 4 - Human Resource Manager Objective Statement

I am presenting to you my achievements, skills, energy and talent for identifying superior job candidates so that we can discuss my joining Company XZY as a member of your Human Resources department.

Objective Statements for Resumes

While the purpose of an objective statement is the same, whether it appears in a cover letter or in a resume, writing an objective statement appearing in a resume is accomplished taking a slightly different approach.  We are going to show the same four example statements above, however, we are going to change the wording around to convert them into resume objective statements.

Resume Objective Examples

In a resume, the objective statement first tells the reader what type of position you're looking for, and then the statement explains why you're qualified for the job.  Remember, our resume formats do not include objective statements, but if you insist on "wasting" space in the document by including a resume objective statement, then here are some samples demonstrating how to write a good objective statement for your resume:

Example 1 -Financial Resume Objective Statement

To obtain a position in your Financial Planning group that utilizes the achievements, skills, strategic thinking and leadership abilities that enable me to consistently exceed earnings goals under less than ideal economic conditions.

Example 2 - Spend Management Resume Objective Statement

To obtain a position as a member of your Spend Management team that utilizes my skills, work ethic, achievements and no-nonsense negotiating abilities.

Example 3 - Real Estate Resume Objective Statement

Seeking a position as a valuable member of your real estate team that leverages my skills, achievements and ability to lead personnel in a direction that provides superior earnings.

Example 4 - Human Resource Resume Objective Statement

Seeking a position as a valued member of your Human Resources department that leverages my achievements, skills, energy and talent for identifying superior job candidates.
