Resume Help

If you're looking for resume help, then we have some good news.  We have a lot of information on this website that can help you write a great resume.  In fact, we've been assembling information on resume writing for nearly ten years now.

Summarizing our Resume Help

In fact, it's a good time to summarize all of the help we can provide you when it comes to resumes.  We have over 60 articles that cover the basics of resume writing and cover letters.  Over the next several paragraphs, we are going to explain the specific help we can offer, as well as links to that information.

Help Choosing the Type of Resume

  Additional Resources

This first series of articles can help you choose the best resume format to use based on your prior work experience and job seeking strategy:

  • Functional Resume - this type of resume emphasizes your work experience and the skills you have acquired over your career.  It's a good format for individuals that don't have a lot of experience, or have timeline gaps in their careers that they'd rather not highlight.
  • Chronological Resume - this is the format that looks familiar to many of us.  The emphasis here is a list of your prior work history in reverse chronological order.  If you have a lot of experience, and your career progression follows a logical order, then this is a good format to use.
  • Combination Resume - this format takes the best elements from both of the above two types of resumes and puts them all together in one place.  The combination resume is a two part resume, where part one is a functional format, and part two is a chronological listing.  This is arguably the most marketable resume you can use.

That last sentence is an important one, because you should view your resume as a marketing tool for your skills.  The articles mentioned above go into more detail on the pros and cons of each resume style.  That information should help you choose the resume format that best fits your individual career situation.

Help Getting your Resume Written

Many of us need help getting started writing our resumes; sometimes it is referred to as writer's block.  If you're having trouble getting started writing your resume, then we think we can help there too.  We've put together a series of articles that can help get you writing quickly:

  • In our article Resume Builder, we tell you how to use the power of your personal computer to help write your resume.  Even if you don't currently own a word processing application, we tell you how to get a high quality program for free.
  • Our article Resume Outline will help give you the basic feel for the various sections of a resume, as well as explanations of the information contained in each section.  Each of our articles on the three resume formats also helps you to understand the types of information to include, and gives you examples for each format.

Help with Resume Terms or Definitions

If you'd like to drill down deeper into each section of a resume, we've recently completed our career dictionary, which includes every definition we could find relating to resumes and resume writing.  These are not the simple definitions you will find on other websites, our definitions will give you the resume help that you need by providing in-depth explanations in addition to examples.

The best place to start is with our definition of resume format, which provides explanations and links to the seven sections commonly found on a resume.
